Assumption Day 2026, 2027 and 2028
Like most of the rest of Latin America, Chile celebrates Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Day on 15 August every year as a public holiday.
In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday 15 August. The holiday will be on Sunday 15 August in 2027.

This holiday (and holy day) has been observed in varying forms since the A.D. 300’s, but it was only made an “obligatory” feast day for Roman Catholics in the year 1950 by the decree of Pope Pius XII.
In Chile, school buildings, government services, and private businesses all generally close down for Assumption Day. People get time off work and school so they can attend Assumption Day mass and learn lessons to do with the life of Mary and the assumption of her body and soul to Heaven soon after her death.
People also like to attend the various religious processions, public markets and cultural events, sports matches, and community meals on Assumption Day. There are numerous festivities going on. It’s not a “minor holiday” in the minds and lives of many of the people of Chile.
